Scripps Research Vessel Reaches Out Beyond the Oceans Scripps Recognized with Three 2008 Diversity AwardsCongratulations to Scripps recipients of UCSD Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity Awards, presented Feb. 10, 2009. - Paul Bueren, R/V Melville senior chief engineer, MPL, was honored with a Universitywide award for his promotion of UC diversity objectives aboard R/V Melville, which sailed recently for the first time with an all-female engineering crew. - Scripps Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC) was honored with a Universitywide award for its ongoing efforts to recruit a diverse group of students, which have resulted in an increased enrollment from underrepresented groups. The CMBC team includes: Jeremy Jackson, Lisa Levin, Naomi Oreskes, Russell Chapman, Sarah Mesnick, and graduate students Damien Cie, Elisa Maldonado, Michael Navarro, Aaron Hartman, Melissa Garren, and Ivan Rosero. - The Scripps Diversity Web Site team - Shannon Casey, Lucina Gonzalez, and Russ Chapman - were honored with the Vice Chancellor Recognition Award for their significant outreach efforts through the design, implementation, and maintenance of the Scripps Diversity web pages. In the Fall of 2004 I received a call from Dr. Russell
Doolittle, Chair of UCSD's Diversity Council. Dr. Doolittle
asked if I was interested in filling the vacant staff
position on the Council. My tenure lasted from January 2005
through August 2008. My experience was very educational and
rewarding.
